3 ways to practice Micah 6:8 in our lives

Here are three ways you can apply Micah 6:8.

“You have been made known, man, which is good ; And what the Lord asks of you is that you do righteousness, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God."

Get involved personally

We should donate money to churches and ministries that do good and preach the gospel. We should also choose to serve where we can be the hands and feet of Jesus. It takes being intentional and stepping out of your comfort zone.

We certainly cannot fight all the injustices or take hold of all the causes of the world. We can ask God to guide us and seek his will, often it is simply going to what we are passionate about or knowing how to seize an opportunity that presents itself. It’s good to start there.

The Good Samaritan (Jesus' example of what it meant to "love our neighbor") did not hire an agency or ministry to take care of the man left for dead. He got involved personally, at his own expense (Luke 10:25-37). It will take a sacrifice of time and money, but we have to be personally involved.

Build a relationship with those you serve

All of humanity is made in the image of God and he loves us all. No matter our origin or nationality, skill or incompetence, Jesus died for each of us (1 Corinthians 5:15).

Getting personally involved starts with building a relationship with the people you serve. Jesus did not keep his distance from us (he touched the lepers) ; neither should we. It's not complicated. Learn and remember people's names, take an interest in their stories, become friends. “Doing justice” should never be impersonal.

Return to the same homeless shelter or abused women's shelter every week or every month. Relationship is a real need that most people feel, which is often more important than you think.

Invite others to take this trip

Jesus sent them in pairs (Mark 6:7). Saul and Barnabas were called together (Acts 13:2). Jesus did not invite his disciples to a building but to a walk of life where they healed and gave generously (Matthew 4:19).

Invite others to take this trip. God invites us with him. We must do the same. For a culture that asks "for the right", this could be the best evangelistic tool we have. “Come and feed the people who live on the streets with me and my church this Friday” teaches a great lesson about the heart of God. An opportunity to see faith in action for non-believers.

If the world sees and experiences God's people walking humbly, loving mercy and doing good. Then maybe our testimony will be more powerful (1 Thessalonians 2:8).
