In 2017, the Protestants and the Christiansinterdenominationels of the whole worldcelebrate the 500ème birthday of the ProtestantReform. Today, most of the Christians are thespiritual descendants of the Protestant Reform. This event orchestrated by God was one oflargest - if it is not the largest any more spiritualalarm clock of all the Christian history.
To celebrate this great spiritual movementenergized by the Holy Spirit, we start a series of posts on the Reform. We will see there thebroad outlines of the life of Martin Luther, ofJean Calvin, but also Solas and many othersubjects. Thus let us start with the beginningby asking three questions (Re) to familiarize itself with Protestantism.
What the Protestant Reform?
What one calls “the Reform” or “Protestantism”is a Christian movement having begun at the16th century within the Roman Catholic church. The initiator of the Protestant Reform wasMartin Luther then an Augustinian monk, professor and Catholic theologist in Germany.
Luther did not wish to found a new movement, but rather to reform the Roman Catholic churchbibliquement. However, It was not accepted byits pairs in spite of its attachment with thehealthy doctrines, and, the Pope sought to make it burn with roughing-hew.
However, God had decided some differently, and It providentially kept Luther to found theProtestant religion with good of other brothersas a Christ in Europe. We will see that theseincredible adventures, including thesequestration of Luther, will lead thereformers to translate the Word of God in thepopular languages, thus making shine theBible in the heart of the men in Europe.
Which were the main actors of the Reform inEurope?
At the beginning of the 17th century, the pillarsof the Protestant Reform carried out their workin Europe of the North-West. Pasteur Martin Luther downtown various of Germany, Ulrich Zwingli in Switzerland in Zurich, and France,Martin Bucer in Strasbourg and later Jean Calvin in Paris, as in Geneva in Switzerlandwhen it had to flee persecution.
“Ultimement, it is by the Holy Spirit that theChurch was reformed and that the light of theGospel of Christ shone again”
In Switzerland always, Pasteur Zwingli in addition sought to unify the Protestants bydiffusing the document of faith called the FirstSwiss Confession. He wrote also the SwissConfession Posterior, recognized in 1566 bymost Swiss reformed churches, and acceptedin Scotland, in Hungary, in Poland, and in theNetherlands.
Pasteur John Knox was also a large reformer to spread the Calvinism in Scotland. Ultimement,it is by the Holy Spirit that the Church was reformed and that the light of the Gospel ofChrist shone again in these dark times to savethe hearts lost in all Europe and even to theborders of the ground on other continents.
From which does the name come from“Protestant”?
The protesting word was initially used like agibe by the adversaries of the Reformsuggested by Luther in Germany then under thereign of the emperor Charles Quint. This last, which had firstly let the Reform exist for a time, was turned over then against the “Protestantprinces” to require their immediate rallyingwith the Catholic church.
However, according to the archives of the PlainProtestant Church of France, “the princesrefuse there, they “protest in front of God [...]as in front of all the men” of their refusal to admit a decree which they consider contrary“with God, with his holy Word, [their] clear conscience and the hello of [their] heart””. [1] Itis in this context of confrontation that was bornthe title from the “Protestant princes”.
However, the protesting word ofLatin protestare originally meant to profess ortestify to its faith. Indeed, the Protestantsrisked their life to testify to the truth and theauthority of the Bible, as well as safety only bythe faith in work rédemptrice of Jésus Christ. The Protestants are thus witnesses of Jésus Christ! All Christian truths are thus Protestants.
“All the Protestant woman-evangelic andevangelic churches in the world are downwardspiritual Reform”
Today, Protestantism in the broad sensegathers mainly the following confessions offaith: reformed churches, the Presbyterianones, Lutherans, Baptists, Anglicans,épiscopaliens and the Methodist ones. Moreover, all the Protestant woman-evangelicand evangelic churches in the world aredownward spiritual Reform.
While learning from the Protestant Reform wethus learn who were our back spiritualgrandparents as a Jésus Christ, and how theGospel of our invaluable Saver and Lord was again proclaimed in all Its glory in Europe thenunder the tyranny of the Pope and the Catholicheresies.
It is a task which the Lord asks us to undertakein the Word and we will see the benefits in ourChristian life of them: “Remember your driverswhich announced the word of God to you; consider which was the end of their life, andimitate their faith” (Hebrew 13:7). To know thelife and the theology of the teachers that Godgave has the Church is a great blessing(Éphésiens 4:11 - 13).
It is thus 500 years ago in this year 2017 whichthe Protestant Reform began during one daywhich was to however be like the differentones… In the next article we will see that itwas the day when 95 theses (or declarations)were nailed on the door of a church at the finebottom of Germany…
