66 New Bible Translations In 2020 Can Be Read By 707 Million People

“Translating the Bible takes years of dedication and generosity, and it is the first step in enabling an ethnic group to gain access to the Word of God that transforms lives."

The Swiss Bible Society shared this excellent news with a press release. In 2020, and despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Bible Societies around the world completed scripture translations into 66 languages ​​used by 707 million people.

And among these translations, 46 are great firsts. "This means that potentially 13 million people have Bible texts in their language for the first time," explains the Bible society.

Among the beneficiaries of these first translations, the American deaf community and several Bibles in Braille.

The complete Bible is therefore now available in 704 languages, used by approximately 6.1 billion people. It should be remembered, however, that nearly 1.7 billion people still do not have the complete Bible in their language. So for the next 20 years the Universal Biblical Alliance (ABU) has an “ambitious vision”, the “Roadmap for biblical translation” : to carry out 1200 translations in order to allow 600 million people to have for the first time access to the Scriptures in their language.

Alexander M. Schweitzer, Executive Director of Global Bible Translation at ABU, explains :

“Translating the Bible takes years of dedication and generosity, and it is the first step in enabling an ethnic group to gain access to the Word of God that transforms lives. When the scriptures exist in the native language of a population, it allows for the development of Bible ministry programs to meet their needs, especially in the area of ​​literacy or trauma healing. Bible translation transforms lives - this is why we are determined to implement the ambitious vision of this Roadmap."
