A broken reed !

2 Kings 18:21 Behold, you have placed it in Egypt, you have taken this broken reed for a support, which penetrates and pierces the hand of everyone who leans on it : so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all those who trust in him.

We know that Egypt represents the thought of the world. The Pharaoh is those who rule him without the fear of God. This verse invites us not to put our trust in the wisdom of this world because it will turn against us and hurt us.

When events jostle and we feel threatened, what is our first reaction ? Do we trust leaders, science, technology... or do we look directly to the Lord ? Is our prayer that of the psalmist : "I lift up my eyes to the mountains... Where will my help come from ?" My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (Psalms 121:1 and 2) ?

To tell the truth, the intervention will be based on where our confidence goes. It sounds crazy, but too often we exhaust all other options before calling on the Creator of the universe. Like the disciples in the storm, we try to solve the problem with our skills and our experience and when that does not work, as the threat becomes more and more pressing, we cry out "Help !"

All these reactions are leaning on a broken reed.

It is so restful to trust in our God. No need to run in all directions, to panic, to get irritated, to rack your brains... just the rest of confidence. Waiting on our Lord is a 100% guarantee that He will do what is necessary for our good. Maybe not in the way we think, or even wish, but He will do just what it takes to get us out of “trouble”.
