A child to talk about God

Out of sight out of mind ! The television news transmits to us instantaneous disasters and miseries. But we are never more moved than when we find ourselves there, at the heart of these events.

How can we express that God is not a distant, insensitive God, indifferent to the fate of humans ? The gospels according to Luke and Matthew chose to tell the story of the birth of a child. Birth indeed evokes fragility, insecurity, lack of control. The Gospel of John uses another image : The Word became a man and dwelt among us. (John 1.14) Literally : “he has pitched his tent among us."

The Word which is God pitches his tent among us. Another way of saying proximity, welcome, but also fragility, vulnerability. In a world which suffers from the thirst for power, from the control of some over others, from demands for security of all kinds..., what an upheaval to announce the coming of God in this way ! A God not in a palace, nor even in a cave or in a stable, but in a tent... to be as close as possible to what humans experience, as close as possible to you and me. Merry Christmas and, in a few days, Happy New Year 2024 !
