A horseshoe

The LORD will keep you from all evil ; he will watch over your life. Psalm 121.7

Niels Bohr (1883-1962), Nobel Prize in Physics and one of the founders of quantum theory, had hung, it is said, a horseshoe above his door. To a friend who once asked him : "What, you're not going to tell me you're superstitious ?" "N. Bohr replied : "No, but it seems that it brings good luck even to those who do not believe it !"

Put a horseshoe on your door, avoid being thirteen at the table, buy a lottery ticket on Friday the 13th or consult your horoscope... Superstition is one of those beliefs that we can consider absurd but to which we are bends willingly... just in case !...

On closer inspection, it is an offense against God who alone is sovereign and holds all things, and in particular our destinies, in his hand. We are not the toys of a blind and capricious fate. We do not therefore have to seek to ward off the blows of fate or to make ourselves favorable to mysterious influences... We feel the need for security and peace : let us seek in God alone the answers and the assurances that allow us to live. It is in Him, and in Him alone, that we can place our trust.

Trust in the Lord and do good ; live in the land, and faith be your food. Delight in the Lord, and he will give you what your heart desires. Commit your fate to the Lord, trust in him, and he will act. (Psalm 37.3-5)
