A name of vanquisher

To him who overcomes, I will give […] a new name, which no one knows except the one who receives it. Revelation 2.17

I developed about 25 years ago a model of artificial fly, to which I had given a rather colorful name.

Monique, my wife, strongly encouraged me to give a new name to this fly. She received the name of a fishing instructor of whom I keep an excellent memory.

So this fly invites me to remember the teaching of this master. It showed its effectiveness last May on a mountain stream.

The new name given to Jacob (see proposed reading) invites him to remember that he has gone from defeat to victory. We too are called to bear a name of conqueror, if we persevere in faith in the person of Jesus Christ, conqueror of death and of the devil who holds power over it. So this new name invites us to walk in the victory won by Christ on the cross, and in his resurrection.
