A new way
You know where I'm going and you know the way. Thomas said to him : Lord, we do not know where you are going. How do we know the way ? Jesus said to her : I am the way, the truth, and the life. One only comes to the Father through me. John 14: 4-6
The revelation of the Father's house surprised the disciples and fed their thinking. Although they had many statements from Jesus to enlighten them, Thomas still did not get it. For him, the Kingdom of God is on earth and the way to reach it must be shown by the Messiah. Thomas therefore asks Jesus for details on this new meeting place. The surprise is complete. Jesus does not propose to follow a particular code of conduct that would create a link between God and men. But it is Jesus who presents himself as the way leading the believer to the Father. The Lord Jesus is not one way among others, he is the only way : One does not come to the Father except through me, he declares.
Moreover, in this world marked by doubt, Jesus presents himself as the truth because he is the full revelation of God, the only source of truth. Without it, the truth is totally inaccessible to man, as Pilate's wry question shows when he asks Jesus : What is truth ? (John 18:38)...
He is also life, the only one to have it in himself. Source of all life, he is the only one who can deliver from death those who believe in the Son (John 3:36). Whoever receives it has eternal life because he, Jesus, is life. The Lord makes him alive for God by communicating to him his life, the only one that allows him to stand in the presence of God.
One can imagine the difficulty of the disciples in understanding this statement. As for us, who have the Holy Spirit, it illuminates our thoughts and helps us to live in the way that Jesus has marked out for us.
