A plan of Lord

"[Paul and Silas] crossed Phrygia and the land of Galatia, having been prevented by the Holy Spirit from announcing the Word in Asia; When they came near Mysia, they tried to go to Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them. "Acts 16: 6-8

 

At that time there were some sixty towns in Phrygia (part of present-day Turkey). Paul and his collaborators might have thought that the evangelization of the region required all their efforts. The verses of this day are a particularly clear example of the will of God who pursues his goal according to the priorities he has established himself. He communicates them to man through his Spirit, hence the importance of living to listen to the Lord.

Paul and Silas were unaware of the details of God's plan for the journey. They need two successive impediments, then a vision, so that they may discern that Macedonia is the goal which God has fixed for them. Let us observe, however, their spirit of obedience : "as soon as Paul receives his vision, his companions and himself, associated in the decision, leave Asia" (Acts 16: 10).

But for what reason does the Spirit prevent them from evangelizing in this part of Asia and in Bithynia ? Are these people under the judgment of God ? Are they unworthy of the Gospel ? Is there not, in this impediment, a contradiction with the command of the Lord : "Go and disciple all the nations" (Matthew 28:19) ? Certainly not, but the Lord has his priority for Paul as for Macedonia. In his plan, it is Paul who is chosen to carry the good news in the city of Philippi. It is a large market, served by the seaport of Neapolis. This situation is conducive to the rapid spread of the Gospel, which is the priority of God.

What about the Bithynians ? They will receive, with other believers, the first Epistle of Peter ; It proves that they were evangelized very early on. By who ? The Word does not reveal it; However, it may be supposed that the Spirit used those who, previously in Asia Minor, had received the testimony of Paul and Barnabas.

The Lord has his plan for "the advancement of the gospel" (Phil 1: 12). We do not know him, hence, hesitations and even annoyances.

The need for the Gospel alone is not a call, nor is it the logic alone. Only the will of the Lord is decisive! He also has a plan for each of his servants. Doubtless, he will not fail to reveal his thoughts to us. Like Paul and his companions, let us be guided by the Lord and act without delay.
