A plan of the Lord

Prevented by the Holy Spirit from speaking the word in Asia, they crossed Phrygia and Galatia. Arrived near Mysia, they were preparing to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them to do so. Acts 16: 6-7

Today's verses are a particularly clear example of God's will pursuing its purpose according to the priorities He Himself has established. He communicates them to man through his Spirit, hence the importance of listening to the Lord.

Paul and Silas did not know the details of God’s plan for the route to be taken. It will take them two successive hindrances, then a vision, for them to discern that Macedonia is the goal God has set for them. However, let us raise their spirit of obedience : as soon as Paul receives his vision, he and his companions, partners in the decision, leave Asia (v. 10).

But why is the Spirit preventing them from evangelizing in this part of Asia and in Bithynia ? Are these people under God's judgment ? Are they unworthy of the gospel ? Is there not in this impediment a contradiction with the command of the Lord : Go and make disciples all the nations (Matthew 28:19) ? Certainly not, but the Lord has his priority for Paul as for Macedonia. In his plan, it is Paul who is chosen to bring the good news to the city of Philippi. It is a large market served by an active port and located equidistant from two other major ports. This situation is conducive to the rapid spread of the Gospel, which is God's priority.

And the Bithynians ? They will receive, along with other believers, the First Epistle of Peter, proof that they were evangelized very early. By who ? The Word does not reveal it ; however, it can be assumed that the Spirit used those who previously in Asia Minor had received the testimony of Paul and Barnabas.

The Lord has His plan for the furtherance of the gospel (Philippians 1:12). We do not know him, hence hesitation and even annoyance. He also has a plan for each of his servants. Let’s not doubt it, the Lord will not fail to reveal his mind. Like Paul and his companions, let us be guided by God and act immediately.
