A title or a testimonial ? What matters most ?
“The remembrance of the righteous is a blessing.” Proverbs 10. 7
The Bible describes Barnabas as "a good man... full of faith" (Acts 11:24) although unlike Paul, he did nothing extraordinary that would highlight him. It is mentioned only 3 times in the book of Acts :
1- For having sold his land to help finance the work of God.
2- For having vouched for the conversion of Paul to the Christians of Jerusalem.
3- For defending Jean-Marc and giving him a second chance.
During his life Barnabas did not add many titles to his name, but he never failed the good testimonies ! The Bible says : “The remembrance of the righteous is a blessing” because in God's eyes it is not what society considers important that really is. At an awards show at a university, a pastor stood up to say : “You’re not thinking about it right now, but you’re all going to die one day or another. When you are lying in your coffin, will the people attending your funeral recite a list of all the degrees you have obtained in your life, or rather will they remember the blessings with which you have enriched their lives ? Will you be remembered for the impact you have had on those around you and the importance of your position in life, or will people instead mourn the loss of the best friend they've ever had ?" Headlines are great, but if you had to choose between a headline and a good testimonial, choose the right testimonial ! Pharaoh had a title, Moses enjoyed a good testimony. Nebuchadnezzar had a title, but Daniel had a good testimony. Jezebel had the title of queen, but Elijah enjoyed a good testimony. Pilate had a prestigious title, but Jesus enjoyed a rich testimony in His favor. We only have one life at our disposal, and then after that will come eternity, where only the actions we have performed for His glory will remain intact !
