A voice from heaven !
The same goes for my word, the one that comes out of my mouth : it does not come back to me without effect, without having done what I want and fulfilled the mission that I have entrusted to it. Isaiah 55.11
Evangelist Spurgeon, invited to preach at the "Crystal Palace" in London, wanted to make sure his voice was strong enough for this huge hall. He decided to give it a try and went there the day before with a friend who sat in the back row. From the platform, Spurgeon loudly spoke this quote from Scripture :
"This saying is sure and worthy of being accepted without reservation : Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15).
He repeated the same verse, this time without straining his voice. The friend signaled to him that the acoustics were good and he went home reassured.
Twenty-five years later, a very sick man asked to see a pastor and he came to see Spurgeon.
- Are you ready to face death ? asked the evangelist.
- Yes, thank God, replied the dying man.
- Tell me. How did you find the salvation of your soul ?
- In an extraordinary way ! As a plumber, I had a repair to do twenty-five years ago under the dome of the Crystal Palace. At that time, I was living without God. Suddenly I heard twice a voice as if from heaven saying :
"This word is certain and worthy of being accepted without reservation : Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners". These words reached my conscience and my heart with such force that that very day I turned to the Lord Jesus.
A prayer for today
Lord, teach us also to discern your voice when we hear it, so that it touches our hearts and lets us know your plan for our lives. Amen.
