About friendship !
1 Samuel 20.17 – Jonathan swore David again in the name of his affection for him, for he loved him as himself.
There are people in the Word of God who are little spoken of and Jonathan is one of them. Yet he is the example of a sincere and faithful friendship. If we put it into context, Jonathan was a pretender to the throne. David, the one who will become his friend, was a very serious competitor, especially since he had received the mandate and the anointing from God to become king in Israel. Many would have seen in him an enemy to be defeated, but Jonathan loved him to the point of sealing this friendship with a wedding ring. This alliance was not selfish but based on true and sincere affection.
Later Jonathan will face the fury of his father Saul and will put his own life in danger to protect his friend. Until his death Jonathan will remain faithful to this friendship, as if he fully agreed with God's choice for the succession to the throne.
In front of this example, can we weigh the weight of our friendship towards others ? Are we capable of giving way to God's choices ? Plus, are we willing to help others reach their full potential, even if it means putting ourselves in an awkward position ?
I wish us all to have friends like Jonathan ! And to be for our “Davids” such faithful and loyal friends.
Good reflection. The Lord bless you.
