Always faithful !
“How great is your loyalty !” Lamentations 3.23
When the United States Marine Corps was created about 200 years ago, military officials thought long and hard about which currency to adopt. Eventually they chose the Latin phrase semper fidelis, a motto today engraved in the minds of every Navy. It means “Always Faithful”. The more important of these two words is “always”. Whatever the cost, a Marine has to be loyal, always. But people appreciate loyalty... in others! Solomon wrote : “Many proclaim their goodness, but the faithful man, who will find it ?” (Proverbs 20. 6). Nonetheless, people need loyal leaders, they want politicians to be loyal in carrying out their campaign promises. Business leaders dream of having loyal employees in their workshops or offices, but loyalty is a declining quality. But God is like a business leader : He has invested in each of us, giving us various talents that He wants to see developed as best as possible. And like any investor, He expects a return on that investment : think of the talent parable. The only one to be expelled from the presence of the master is the one who has not made fruitful his talent (Matthew 25. 27). Every aspect of our life is an opportunity to be faithful by using our talents for the good of others.
1- at work, for example : “Whatever you find to do, do it with the strength you have” (Ecclesiastes 9. 10).
2- with our goods and our wealth : we live in prosperous countries, where the poorest would be considered rich if they lived in the majority of the other countries of the world.
3- with our promises and commitments : giving your word as a guarantee only has value if you always keep your word. God is not asking us to be the best we can be, but to give the best of ourselves ! The value of faithfulness is crucial in the eyes of God. Why ? Because “His faithfulness is great” and He wants us to be like Him !
