Amazing things (2)

Sunday May 30, 2021

Just as many were horrified when they saw him, his face was so disfigured, his appearance so different from that of humans, he will purify many nations. Kings will shut their mouths before him. Isaiah 52. 14, 15

Amazing things (2)

The prophet Isaiah had said, long before Jesus came to earth : "How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, of him who brings very good news who proclaims salvation" (Isaiah 52.7). So, in the gospels, many were amazed by his teaching and his works.

Yet Jesus was rejected by this people whom God had chosen. No place for him in the inn when he was born (Luke 2. 7), no place to lay his head (Matthew 8. 20). In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus offered, with loud cries and with tears, prayers and supplications to his Father (Hebrews 5:7). His soul was "sad to death" (Matthew 26:38). "Seized with anguish, Jesus prayed more insistently, and his sweat became clots of blood which fell to the ground" (Luke 22. 44).

But the end of today's verse describes the time when every eye will see Jesus in his glory when he returns to establish his kingdom on earth. Everyone will also be amazed when they see him. Astonishment before his majesty will subject each to his authority.

Today we can be astonished at the person of Jesus and at what he did. But what matters for our eternal future is to believe in him, to accept his love shown on the cross (John 3:16). We are then among those he will come to seek to be always with him (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17).
