As the apple of his eye...

The Lord found him in a barren steppe, in an uninhabited wilderness, filled with howling. He took care of him and he educated him. He watched over him as the apple of his eye. Deuteronomy 32.10

What could be more precious and sensitive than our eyes ! Sight is a wonderful sense that opens up to others and the world... At the center of the eye is the iris, whose colors vary infinitely from person to person. In the middle of the iris, the black point corresponds to the pupil which functions like the diaphragm of a camera. She is also known as the "apple" in the well-known phrase "to hold on to someone or something like the apple of one's eye."

On several occasions we find this expression in the Bible. This is how God speaks of his people : He who touches you is as if he touches the apple of my eye (Zechariah 2:12). We are all precious in the sight of God ; he demonstrated it by offering his Son to save us! It is with this assurance that David, when he is in distress, can pray to God : Keep me as the apple of your eye ! Hide me well under your wings... (Psalm 17.8) But reciprocally, it is with the same seriousness that God asks us to consider his commandments : Follow my precepts and you will live, keep my teachings like the apple of the eye with your eyes (Proverbs 7: 2). Is that the case ?
