Be hospitable

Persevere in brotherly love. Do not forget hospitality, because by exercising it some have unwittingly lodged angels. Hebrews 13: 1,2

Above all, have ardent love for one another, for love will cover a host of sins. To exert hospitality to one another without whispering. 1 Peter 4:8,9

When the Word was written, the practice of hospitality served an important social function, especially since the journeys were often long and difficult. We therefore understand that the verses of the day remind us of its importance. And we can well consider that, despite the development of means of communication, hospitality remains relevant.

Hospitality is very positive because, in addition to the services rendered, it gives believers the possibility of making fraternal love a reality. And then, who has not experienced the joy of meeting a passing family in their locality ? For each one, it is an opportunity for happy sharing and spiritual enrichment.

The apostle John notes the good Gaius does by opening his house to those who had gone to share the gospel. He offered his hospitality not only to those he knew, but also to strangers (3 John 5). Hospitality towards strangers may seem hazardous, it is true, but what an enrichment in contact with people of different cultures !

It is undoubtedly rare to receive a visit from an angel one day, but the hospitality shown in the name of the Lord on behalf of the needy is counted as if one received Jesus himself. This is what the Lord says : I was a stranger and you welcomed me (Matthew 25:35) ?

When the apostle Peter invites us to hospitality, he adds to this exhortation a little note full of innuendo : without murmuring. Our comfort may be upset, and so is the schedule for the day. But it is worth it ! A simple invitation to a person for refreshment can touch that person and prepare them to receive the gospel.

One day the Lord will bring everything to light and show what simple gestures of hospitality have produced.
