Before the foundation of the world (3)

Friday April 30, 2021

In him God elected us before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before him. Ephesians 1. 4

Jesus... can perfectly save those who draw near to God through him. Hebrews 7. 22, 25

Before the foundation of the world (3)

Before the foundation of the world God the Father loved his Son Jesus Christ. He had chosen him to be his Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. We finally read that :

- Believers have been elected (chosen) in Christ.

In his plans God wanted men to be saved through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He considered them chosen before they even existed. This choice (or this "election") is a mystery, which man cannot elucidate. God, who is sovereign (1 Timothy 6:15; Job 33:13), alone knows how to reconcile the content of his eternal plans, his project, and his realization in time, on earth. In his sovereignty and in his love, God chose to save humans. He sacrificed his Son, the Lamb, known before the foundation of the world, to take away their sins. And it is by faith in him that everyone is saved.

These believers "elected in Christ", God saw them in advance intimately associated with his Son. This "election" that the Bible affirms in no way excludes the responsibility of men to believe that Christ died for them. God then offers everyone his grace without distinction. God "wants all men to be saved" (1 Timothy 2. 4). No one can refuse to be saved by pretending that he is not elected. He who accepts salvation then finds out that he is elected.

So, before the foundation of the world :

- Eternal love united the Father and his Son Jesus.

- A Lamb in the person of the beloved Son of God, was set apart, chosen to take away the sin of the world.

- Believers were elected in Christ.
