"He is the rock, his work is perfect." Deuteronomy 32. 4
The Gibraltar Peninsula is separated from Africa by
the Straits of Gibraltar, a compulsory crossing point between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. On this British territory, the "rock of Gibraltar", 426 m high, dominates the surrounding sea and is an important landmark for sailors. What stability, what solidity, what landmark for millennia this rock ! And yet, it is a very weak image, for us Christians, of the great Rock of ages !
In the Word of God, the rock symbolizes :
- A refuge, a protection : "On God alone my soul rests peacefully ; From him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my high retreat ; I will not be much shaken ... He alone is my rock and my salvation, my high retreat : I will not be shaken"(Psalm 62: 1, 2, 6).
Meditation and prayer are strong ways to strengthen faith and hope. At the beginning of the psalm, David trembles on the rock, but his faith in God is strengthened after recalling his characters; He can therefore say, full of confidence : "I will not be shaken".
- A security : "My dove, which holds you in the cracks of the rock ..." (Cant 2. 14). In the spiritual language of the N.T, we can say that God has put us "into Christ Jesus". We are secure in him.
- A food : "He made him suck the honey of the rock, and the oil of the hard rock" (Deut 32:13). Honeycombs are found in the cracks of the cliffs. The olive tree can grow on rocky terrain, where no other fruit tree grows.
- The Spiritual Rock : "All (the Israelites in the wilderness) drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual Rock that accompanied them : and the Rock was Christ" (1 Cor 10: 4).
This Rock, which kept the people alive in the wilderness, represents my Lord as the source of living water that quenches me.
What beautiful pictures give us the rock! Do not I want to place myself firmly today on the "rock of the centuries" (Is 26, 4), in order to find protection, habitation, sweetness and refreshment ?
We can tremble on the Rock, but it does not tremble, unlike that of Gibraltar, located in a region with seismic risk !
