"Have a summary of the sound words which you have heard of me, in the faith and love that is in Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 1: 13
"What advice can you give me to read the Bible and study it effectively ? This is the question that a young Christian asked me when he left a church. Embarrassed, I mainly suggested ... to buy a telescope !
You may have already heard about the microscope image and the telescope to illustrate two possible readings of the Bible. We can study a verse in detail, weighing each word : we then use the microscope. One can also seek to grasp the general idea of a whole book or follow a theme throughout the Bible : one then takes the telescope.
Both approaches are certainly of interest. However, we find that many Christians use the microscope more often than the telescope: they know a certain chapter or a few verses of a book, but they lack an overview. The danger grows then to retain only the verses that go in the direction of his own ideas or to leave some of their context to deviate meaning, even involuntarily. Moreover, heresies often arise from the fact that a verse is extracted from its context and is exaggeratedly developed.
That is why Paul advised Timothy to have a "summary" of the apostle's words. The Greek term used means "a glimpse, a brief and summary exposition" : he therefore suggests the use of a telescope ! The Word is not a systematic exposition of doctrine with a ready-made summary ; The reader must penetrate little by little the whole of divine revelation so that the great principles, the very essence of divine truth, appear to him. It is this "spirit of the Scriptures", always deepened, that will make it grow.
But this is not enough : it is still necessary to use its telescope well, that is to say :
- To hold firmly to the truth thus discovered : it is the meaning of the verb "to have" of the beginning of the verse ;
- To believe without hesitation what God reveals to you : it is "faith", without which the Word is useless (Heb 4: 2);
- Receiving it as a "love letter" : it is "love" for the Lord that must motivate you, otherwise your knowledge is barren (1 Cor 8: 1-3);
- Always connect your knowledge to a person, "Christ Jesus", for the truth is concentrated in him (Ephesians 4:21).
