Can God forgive everything ?

If we recognize our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us and to cleanse us from all evil. 1 John 1. 9

My sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life. They will never perish and no one will be able to tear them from my hand. John 10. 27, 28

Can God forgive everything ?

Perhaps a Christian has made a very serious mistake, and he wonders if God can forgive him. Let's look at the example of King David, about which the Bible tells us a lot (2 Samuel 11). What did he do ?

He is resting instead of going to war with his army. He covets a woman and commits adultery with her.

He is a murderer : he has her husband Uriah killed to hide his fault. David would later declare : "The man who did this is worthy of death."

However, when God discovers his faults, David confesses them (2 Samuel 12:13) and God promises him : "You will not die". A sincere and deep confession is of immense importance. Psalm 51 shows us what work of conscience David went through : he took the measure of his sin, of the offense done to God, and he returned to God.

"If anyone has sinned, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the Righteous" (1 John 2.1). Jesus, our advocate, takes care of bringing us back to God when we have sinned. God is righteous when he forgives those who confess their faults : "He is righteous and he justifies those who have faith in Jesus" (Romans 3:26). For God forgives, not in relation to our works or our conduct, but through the work of Christ. Jesus suffered and died on the cross for this forgiveness to be possible.

This wonderful certainty that God forgives should not, however, allow us to take sin lightly. It cost our Savior too much ! Let us ask him for the strength to live to please him.
