Cherish the true freedom

"Speak and live like people who will be judged by a law that makes you free." James 2.12

Law and Freedom : these are two apparently contradictory words. The law is related to obligations, rules, obedience, submission ... Not really popular nowadays! In short, everything that seems to be the opposite of freedom. And yet ...

"God's guidance leads us to a life of freedom and joy."

Without law, no freedom. The absence of law is anarchy, violence, oppression of the weakest. Without the law of the highway code, it would no longer be possible to circulate. To stay alive, it is better not to ignore the law of earthly attraction. And there are many other examples.

"Liberté, Liberté cherie" : this expression so dear to our hearts is taken from our French anthem, La Marseillaise. The word "Liberty" appears on the pediment of all our town halls to recall this principle of the Republic. Montesquieu wrote : "Freedom, that good that makes other goods enjoy."

If freedom is a universal aspiration, not everyone envisions it in the same way. Its definition varies from one people to another, from one generation to another, from one individual to another... And among those who proclaim loud and clear, how many are actually trapped addictions, destructive habits, misconceptions, etc. ?

We are called to live under the law of freedom. Because "The revelation of your words enlightens, it gives intelligence to those who lack experience." Psalm 119: 130 The more we understand the truth, the more free we are from our bonds, anger, fear, shame, hate, resentment... For God is a God of love and kindness. His precious advice leads us to a life of freedom and joy.

Only those who have been liberated by Christ are "truly free" (John 8.36). What Jesus did on the cross is the greatest work of freedom possible. All that enslaves us has been destroyed. And the understanding of the divine law makes us free. "You will know the truth and the truth will set you free." John 8.32

A prayer for today

Lord, I want the work of Christ on the cross to make me truly free. Reveal yourself more to me through your Word. I want your Liberty, your dear Liberty !
