Cherished freedom

It is for freedom that Christ has made us free. Galatians 5.1

The aspiration for freedom is universal. Image of God, man is not made for servitude or the straitjacket, but for freedom. Freedom is not given, however. It belongs, said André Malraux, to those who conquered it. Regarded as heroes, freedom fighters such as Spartacus or Martin Luther King paid a heavy price for the defense of their freedom. For them, it was better to die free than to live in slavery !

Above the pantheon of heroes who died for freedom, throne Jesus Christ. Of all human beings living on earth, he was the only one who, from the first day of his life to the last, was free. The first tyranny fought by Jesus is not of a political nature. It works inside the heart of every man. It is the tyranny of sin that binds, alienates every man from the desires and tendencies of his evil nature. None of us escapes it : each is the slave of that which triumphs over him. To free us, Jesus made an exchange. He offers to take our chains upon himself to give us his freedom.

This exchange took place on the cross where, nailed down, Jesus was in agony, bound hand and foot. Three days later, as a free man, conqueror of all bondage, He resurrects. His freedom is for you ! Will you take it ?

Proposed reading : Psalm 107, verses 10 to 16.

107.10 Those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death were prisoners of misery and chains

107.11 because they had rebelled against the words of God because they had despised the advice of the Most High.

107.12 He humbled their hearts with suffering ; they stumbled, and no one helped them.

107.13 In their distress they cried unto the LORD, and he delivered them out of their distresses ;

107.14 they brought them out out of darkness and out of the shadow of death; he tore off their bonds.

107.15 Let them praise the LORD for his mercy and for his wonderful works to men,

107.16 For he hath broken the bronze doors to pieces, he has broken the iron bolts in pieces.
