Christianity lived

Many accounts relate acts of courage accomplished in France during the Second World War. Several books and films have made known the history of Chambon-sur-Lignon from 1940 to 1945. In this village and its surroundings, several thousand Jews, mainly children, were welcomed. Most survived the persecution. With discretion, they were distributed in the often poor farms of the surroundings, where they were fed and surrounded by affection.

During the years that followed, these acts of courage and humanity remained rather hidden. In fact, those who had opened their homes and their hearts, took it for granted. To journalists who came to inquire, an elderly woman used to answer by opening her Bible. She read these words of Christ : "Indeed, I was hungry and you gave me to eat ; I was thirsty and you gave me to drink ; I was a stranger and you welcomed me ; I was naked and you clothed me ; I was sick and you visited me" (Matthew 25, 35, 36). She explained with simplicity and conviction that God asks to love his neighbor as himself. This is what they had done.

Behind this dedication very often hid a solid faith, supported by a serious knowledge of the Bible. This is why these people took risks to save others. And above all, this is why they have been able to remain humble and discreet. Beyond courage and kindness, they had one motive : to be faithful to God.
