Combine knowledge with virtue

Make every effort to combine virtue with your faith, knowledge with virtue... 2 Peter 1: 5-7

Virtue (courage) is an essential quality for a fighter under the command of Jesus Christ. We considered it last Saturday. However, if it is very good to be full of courage, full of zeal for the Lord, it is still necessary to know his will. What can a soldier do who does not know where he is going, who does not have a staff map or instructions on how to progress ? Fortunately, whoever hired you provides you with everything you need to make your fight to his glory.

Of course, your roadmap and the instructions to follow are available to you in the Bible, which contains everything you need to know, including the example of men of faith who have served their Master well. You will not find there, for all things, a list of commandments to be performed or forbidden things, but you will get to know the thoughts of God.

You know very well that in mathematics, for example, you don't have to find all the laws on your own. Others have done it before you and you just need to rely on their work. To acquire knowledge about the Word of God, it is much the same thing : there are commentaries from very knowledgeable Christians, biographies of good soldiers of Jesus Christ, well-grounded sermons that can help you. Do not neglect what is thus placed within your reach, but make sure that these teachings conform to those of the Bible.

Warning ! Knowledge that is only intellectual will not be of much use to you in difficulties. Real knowledge needs daily experience. This corresponds to the training a soldier must undergo to effectively use the full armor of God (Ephesians 6: 13-18) and not be caught off guard in battle.

Finally, remember that you have the Holy Ghost. He is the one who will lead you into all truth (John 16:13).
