Common sense available

From heaven, the Lord is watching men to see if there is one who is understanding, who seeks God. Psalm 14.2

Husavik, Iceland's whale watching capital, houses a maritime museum. Its section "Man and Nature" traces a century of life in the region, from 1850 to 1950. A documentary reconstructing the life of a family of fishermen at the beginning of this period touched me a lot. We discover the course of a day. At three in the morning, the father gets up. Invoke God on the events to come. Bless the food (dried fish). It is then a matter of preparing the boat, the fishing equipment. Before setting out to sea, everyone recollects themselves and we ask God for his protection in navigation. Who knows the circumstances that will be encountered, particularly meteorological ? We hope to come back safe and sound. And if possible be able to bring back sockets that will meet the physical and material needs of the family.

Our society increasingly refers to advanced technologies and other media. Great then is the temptation to ignore the spiritual dimension of existence. To rely only on our own capacities, merits and resources : material wealth, well-being, intellectual capacities, faith in science alone. At the risk of missing out on a great blessing that Holy Scripture likes to emphasize.

Proposed reading : Letter to the Philippians, chapter 4, verses 5-7.

4.5 May your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is near.

4.6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything make your needs known to God through prayers and supplications, in an attitude of gratitude.

4.7 And the peace of God, which is beyond all comprehension, will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus.
