Compassion and Power

"The Lord, seeing her, was moved with compassion toward her." "Then he said : Young man, I tell you, get up !" Read Luke 7: 11-17

Jesus arrives at the village of Nain with his disciples. He then encounters a funeral procession, with a widow in his head carrying his only son, his last support on earth. What is more pathetic ? It is a situation that arouses emotion and sympathy ; It is not surprising "that a considerable crowd of the city was with it". But all these people were helpless in such a situation! The young man was dead, all that could be done was to "carry him out." And Jesus meets this procession. As far as we know, Jesus had not yet exercised his power in the realm of death. So in this crowd no one had any hope that he would intervene, once death had accomplished his work. In this case, Jesus had to take the initiative. How will God act in the presence of a heart desolate by death, the consequence of sin ? "The Lord, seeing her, was moved with compassion." "The delights of sin" can seduce for a while. But in fact sin has unleashed humanity a flood of pain, suffering, injustice and violence. The worst pains are probably those caused by death. It sows desolation, breaks our hearts, breaks natural bonds, tears us a loved one ... We have only ... the silence of death. Is it not an immense comfort to know that God is sensitive to the pain of his creature ? Although sin and initial rebellion are the cause of death and its consequences, God shares the pain of mourning. We learn to know God's heart a little.

But Jesus does not only feel compassion; He is about to conquer victoriously the power of death which will soon manifest itself at Golgotha !

Of course, all the power of death must fall on Jesus on the cross - O mystery - it will be necessary to wait until Easter morning ... Here God has triumphed over death in Jesus. If Jesus has risen, all those who have put their faith in him will also be resurrected.

Yes, compassion and power are in God !
