Confused...

“Jesus drew near, and walked with them... and they stopped, looking saddened.” Luke 24.15, 17

The two disciples on their way to Emmaus are overwhelmed with sadness and in despair. They are in pain, they are sick. Everything fell apart for them the moment Jesus died on the cross. They move away from Jerusalem to distance their shattered dream from a possible future without light. Then a stranger joins them, enters the conversation and pushes them to empty their bags. The reader of the Gospel knows that the mysterious traveling companion is none other than Jesus "but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him." Did you notice the surprising of this story ? The disciples are not surprised that a stranger takes root, and they, naturally enough, argue with him. We will talk about the natural welcome of the men of that time and of this region, but this attitude remains unexpected. Often people who are in pain, who are in anguish or despair, sink into a painful silence for those around them. This confinement in silence increases the evil and makes sick those close to them who can no longer intervene. Ask yourself the question : When you feel bad, what do you do so as not to make those around you sick and who live by your side ? If you didn't choose to be wrong, neither will the people who love you. The disciples of Emmaus do not shut themselves up and whoever approaches them with kindness can help them break through the deadlock they are sinking into. So the sick disciples are really expressing what is on their heart that is overwhelming them. Verbalizing is a way of expelling, but it is also an opportunity to "empty yourself" to be filled with a word that can heal. On your painful path, do not shut yourself up ; a companion may appear and allow you to change lanes.
