Cracked cisterns - Where do you seek happiness ?

The desire for happiness is a natural and universal feeling. The human being pursues him unceasingly, proof that he is not happy. He seeks to obtain what he thinks can contribute to it : money, power, sensual pleasures, leisure, culture, etc. But these joys are ephemeral, they leave dissatisfied and worried. King Solomon had explored all the pleasures of life and denied himself nothing; when he takes stock, he notes : "All is vanity and pursuit of the wind" (Ecclesiastes 1. 12). Satisfying all imaginable desires does not fill the heart, but dries it up and disappoints ever more. It is trying to drink from what the Bible calls cracked cisterns that do not hold water (Jeremiah 2. 13).

But then, how to obtain this water which really quenches the soul, where to find this happiness which lasts ? Jesus said : “He who drinks the water that I will give him will never be thirsty” (John 4.14; John 7.37). He himself is the source of living waters, he gives eternal life. To drink living water is to believe in him. Access to this source is open : by his sacrifice on the cross, Jesus took away our sins, which blocked our way to God.

You who need peace, forgiveness and love, obtain this precious, free water by faith in the Son of God, who died for you. And you will sing for joy because of the happiness of your heart (Isaiah 65:14).
