Crossed looks !

Luke 22:61 and 62 - The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered what the Lord had said to him : "Before the rooster crows today, you will have denied me three times" ! He slipped outside and began to cry bitterly.

How terrible this crossing of looks must have been ! Pierre, the intrepid, has just denied his friend three times and there he meets the eyes of the latter. Yet he had done his best, he had drawn the sword to defend Him ; he had followed Him at the risk of his life to see what would happen, when everyone else except John had fled. Yet he had cracked in front of simple people, much less dangerous than the soldiers he had braved.

My reflection goes on this gaze of the Lord. Pierre was pulled down in a sort of spiral that pulled him down. The moment their eyes met, Pierre's consciousness awoke. Not only did he remember the prophetic Word spoken over his life, but that look brought him to sincere and deep repentance.

When this gaze of the Lord rests on us he is not accusing, not even moralizing. It is as if the Lord said : "You failed but I have already forgiven you !". I allow myself to think this because Jesus had a special interview with Peter after his resurrection. In this face to face, no reproach, no : "I told you so", just a question : "Pierre do you love me ?". This question was probably already in the gaze of that terrible evening. Then Jesus restores him in his mission, in other words we could say : "It's good, we don't talk about it any more, become the shepherd of my sheep !".

My beloved, you may have failed, even seriously. You are afraid to meet the eyes of the Lord and you flee from Him. Like Adam, you are afraid, afraid of His presence, afraid of His reproaches, afraid of meeting His gaze. However, if you come to Him, you will see that this look does not condemn you, on the contrary it is full of love. This look tells you with compassion : "We don't talk about it any more, get back on the road !".
