Despite the storm !

Isaiah 45.22 - Turn to me, and you will be saved, all of you who are in the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.

Do you know that it was from this text that Charles Spurgeon, the great evangelist, was brought to conversion ? Although his father and grandfather were pastors, young Charles was in search of God but he could not find an answer to the anguish caused by the awareness of his state of sin.

A small Methodist chapel had invited a preacher, but a snowstorm prevented him from coming. This same snowstorm had forced young Charles to take shelter in said chapel. As the preacher did not arrive, a simple, uneducated man spoke to the dozen people present. Charles Spurgeon had his heart deeply touched by this short but so inspired preaching.

My thinking goes in two directions : first, we should not always see the hand of the devil behind negative events. This snowstorm caused a divine meeting between a young man in search of salvation and a preacher of "fortune". The second is that God can use anyone for a great work, anyone can be you or me. No need for specialization, just a heart to listen to God and do what He asks. What Spurgeon has become is the work of God, but let us not forget that at the base of this "great ministry" there was a simple man who assuredly obeyed the injunctions of the Holy Spirit.

Finally my beloved, come to think of it, who was the most important ? That man whose name we don't know or Charles Spurgeon ? Andrew, Simon's brother, who brought him to Jesus or the apostle Peter that Simon became ?
