Disaster

"Whoever hears these words that I say, and do not put them into practice, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand ; and the rain fell, the floods came, the winds blew, they beat this house ; and she fell, and her fall was great." Matthew 7. 26, 27

In September 2017, an unprecedented natural disaster strikes the Caribbean : Irma is the strongest and longest hurricane ever seen in the Atlantic, with winds of more than 300 km / h for 33 hours in a row.

Islands where life was good are transformed into fields of ruins. This is chaos: the weather station has been destroyed, firefighters are stricken, the roof of the hospital has been torn down, the roads are impassable ; water, food, electricity are missing, the means of communication no longer work; even emergency equipment prepositioned before the disaster is unusable; insecurity appears. The inhabitants, poor or rich, have lost everything, including hope. The catastrophe destroyed everything that mattered to them : the work of their lives, their safety, their happiness ; many are looking to leave their island.

The stories and images of the damage arouse emotion and compassion. But they also make us think : the island could represent my life ; she is not safe from storms ! The weather station, it would be my values ​​and my bearings ; are they strong enough and reliable when things are bad ? The firefighters, the devastated hospital, the damaged rescue equipment : what resources will be really available to help me at critical moments ?

Now let us read what precedes the verse of the day : "Whoever hears these words that I say, and puts them into practice, I will compare him to a prudent man who built his house on the rock ; and the rain fell, the floods came, the winds blew, they threw themselves against this house ; and it did not fall because it was founded on rock" (Matt 7:24, 25).

I can not stop a hurricane from going through my life. But now I can build my life on a perfectly reliable foundation, able to withstand the storms of life, the winds of false teachings, the traps of temptation : Jesus, our good Shepherd, our help, our rock (2 Sam. 2, 3, 32, 47).
