Dissatisfaction

What must I do to inherit eternal life ? Luke 18:18

Many think that if they were rich, if they could spend lavishly, they would be happier.

A young man, head of the synagogue, reputed to be rich, comes to meet Jesus to ask him this question which suggests his dissatisfaction : What must I do to inherit eternal life ?

Rich and yet dissatisfied !

Obviously he is familiar with the biblical writings which speak of "eternal life". He even admits to having put into practice a certain number of the commandments of God which Jesus quotes to him.

In fact, this is the second part of the Ten Commandments which relate to our relationships with our fellow human beings: Jesus does not mention the first which relate to our relations with God. He will summarize them simply by his answer : You still lack one thing : sell all that you have, distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me.

Jesus touches here the sensitive point of this young man : his riches. They are the center of his life. He is ready to "do" something more, but not to give up what he cares about most.

What are the “riches” of all kinds at this time that prevent us from responding to the invitation Jesus : Come, follow me ?
