Do "greater works" than Jesus, is it possible ?

Search the Scriptures

I tell you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do, and he will do greater, because I go to the Father ; and whatever you ask in my name, I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. John 14.12-13

When I was little, one of my favorite expressions learned at school was : "Little by little, the bird makes its nest". I sometimes took the time to look for bird's nests in the trees and I was amazed when I saw a bird bring a branch to finish its nest !

Jesus went to the Father and sent us the Holy Spirit. He tells us with conviction that we really can do greater works than he.

Why is this not the case everywhere on Earth ?

I think one of the reasons is that we too often look for instant miracles and spontaneous revivals when God asks us to obey the little things He commands us in His Word and do them faithfully.

Like you, I believe and expect miracles and revivals, but in the meantime let that not prevent us from acting as Mother Teresa said so well : "We are not called to make great things on Earth, but lots of little things with immense love."

For example, imagine if each of us were faithful in transmitting God's love day after day to those whom God entrusts to us ? To a spouse, child, neighbour, colleague, etc. We would all together literally do "greater works" than Jesus !

Our role is to love those whom God has entrusted to us. The role of the Holy Spirit is to convince them of their need for God and salvation in Jesus Christ. Quality time with a loved one, an attentive ear given to a stranger are sometimes enough to bring Heaven to Earth.

Take the example of 3 workers in the 4th century. We ask them the same question : "What are you doing ?"

The first, slow to the task and nonchalant answers : "I cut stones, but I don't really know why..."

The second is a bit more enthusiastic : "I'm building a building."

The third carves the stones at high speed with immense enthusiasm : "I am building a cathedral !"

Together, faithful in small tasks and relationships, let us build the kingdom of God, on Earth as in Heaven, and manifest its greatness !

Listen the voice of God

Let's take the time to listen to what God wants to say. What little things is God asking you to do today ?

Praying is simple. Speak to God as you would your closest friend. God loves you and he can hear everything. Here is an example of a prayer : “Lord, your Word says that “he who is faithful in small things is also faithful in large things”. I want to obey you and be faithful to you for every little thing you ask of me, and do it with a heart filled with love. Amen."

Praise God

To praise God is to express our gratitude to him. Today, what are your subjects of recognition ? Take a time to thank the Lord.

Act today

Now, deepen what you have received. What can you put in place to apply what God has told you ? Write down concrete actions you can take.

Honor the Lord

Our journey for the day ends. Let us pray together to honor our God.

"Lord, thank you for the privilege of being able to help build your Kingdom. Yours is the reign, the power and the glory, amen !"
