Then he (Jesus) said to them : Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation. Mark 16. 15
So they (the leaders of the people) absolutely forbade them to speak or teach in the name of Jesus... Filled with the Holy Spirit they proclaimed the word of God with assurance. Acts 4:18, 31
Do not tell anyone !
It is not uncommon to hear this expression from some people who think they are trusting you. And if we come to speak of a common knowledge, then the injunction becomes more urgent : "Above all, do not tell anyone !"
Some secrets must not be revealed and some professions are even subject to "professional secrecy". There are other secrets which are gossip or slander. This is why their author does not want them to be shared. God severely condemns these actions.
Conversely, don't we often keep the key secret to our happiness, the gospel ? Did not the Lord send his disciples, asking them to preach the good news of salvation to all nations ?
Jesus himself preached this gospel : "I have spoken openly to everyone" (John 18. 20). All the more so since he did not speak on his own, but everything he had heard in the secret of his intimacy with God, his Father, he revealed to men : "The Father who sent me, He himself has prescribed to me what I should say and proclaim" (John 12.49).
Following the Lord, let us not be afraid to share as widely as possible the secret of our happiness. Let us tell everyone that Jesus can offer him eternal life if they put their trust in him ! Satan, as in the early days of the Church (verses cited at the top) would like to stop us, but he was defeated on the cross !
