Don't expect to be appreciated !
“Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
Many people complain that they are not appreciated by their boss or colleagues, students or employees, despite their excellent work. Their mistake is to imagine that their identity depends on what they do. When they feel unappreciated, they tend to imagine that other people's opinions are important and necessary for their sense of well-being. Taken to an extreme this reasoning makes them ineffective and hypocritical, for they seek only to please others, rather than God. Our identity is independent of what we do. It doesn’t depend on what title we have or how much space our office takes up. So it is so important to define our identity before God. We are, after all, sons of the King of kings ! Our true identity is anchored in Christ. He is the source of our peace, our security, our joy. Our work is to honor Him and express our respect for Him, as Paul suggests : “Whatever you do, do all for the glory of God.” Pleasing God must be our primary objective, not pleasing people. When we are assured of our identity in Christ, it frees us from the fear of being criticized or dominated by others. The talents we have come from God and should be used for His glory and motivate us to strive for excellence in each of our tasks. Whether you are eventually liked or not, whatever ! The only one who can truly reward you is God. Any other appreciation is only temporary and without deep roots. So do everything for the glory of God !
