Doubts on the path of faith

Seeing that the wind was strong, he (Peter) was afraid and, as he began to sink, he cried : "Lord, save me !" Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, grabbed it and said to him : "Man of little faith, why did you doubt ?" They got into the boat and the wind died down. Matthew 14. 30-32

Doubts on the path of faith

- I often have doubts. My faith seems so weak, and I wonder if I have faith or not. Is that the case ?

- You know that doubt is not disbelief, but being satisfied leads to it. The unbelieving man does not believe what is said to him, he refuses it. Whoever doubts asks questions, wonders, sometimes painfully. When there is talk of doubt in the New Testament, it is about believers : Peter, when he sank in water while walking towards Jesus, certain disciples when they met the risen Jesus, etc.

Do not hesitate to tell your doubts to God. He will answer you. He can do this directly when you pray alone or with a Christian friend, or by reading the Bible, for the Word of God is alive. It reaches to the limits of soul and spirit. And faith comes from what is meant by the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12,13 ; Romans 10:17).

Doubts also appear as a test of faith, which makes it possible to distinguish our beliefs based on the wisdom of men, even Christians, and our convictions based on the Word of God. With the certainty that the Lord Jesus will always be near us, we learn not to let go of his hand, and our faith grows. A Christian who has gone through doubts has often acquired the humility necessary to dialogue with others and share their concerns.
