In Genesis we read the story of Jacob's wife, Rachel, and her desperate desire to have a child. She could no longer bear the idea of living without knowing the joy of carrying a child, without experiencing all that she had planned for her as a woman. In Jewish culture, a childless woman was regarded with disdain, as an incomplete person. Rachel's suffering was unbearable and she cried out to Jacob: "Give me children, or I die !" (Genesis 30: 1).
Bringing a soul to Christ is very similar to giving birth. The Holy Spirit conceives this desire in our hearts and we begin to nurture the process, growing in our relationship, praying for them with regularity. We feel the moment approach and we sigh after seeing our new baby being delivered. We want to hold and feed our new child, experiencing both the suffering and the joy of birth. When this happens finally, when our new baby is born, we do not want to pose it. All we can think of is helping our child grow and flourish and embody the image of Christ.
If only each disciple of Christ felt the same sense of passion and urgency to bring a new person into the kingdom of Christ ! What would happen if desire were burning in our hearts until we finally cry out to God : "Give me a spiritual child or I die !" You and I know what would happen: God would honor such prayers.
But wherever I go, I meet Christians who have never experienced the joy of bringing a soul to Christ. They come to me to ask for advice, sometimes embarrassed by this confession. I tell them not to be ashamed but rather to be excited, because the Holy Spirit is working their hearts.
I said to them : "The first step in sharing your faith is to develop an ardent desire to do so." And we can count on the Holy Spirit to kindle this desperate desire in us if we ask Him and We allow Him to do it.
