Even in the test
Misfortune often overtakes the righteous, but the Lord always delivers him. Psalm 34.20
The Christian is not lifted above the human condition. Certainly, his spirit is regenerated and at peace with God, but his body and even his soul remain fragile, vulnerable and sometimes tottering. A mosquito does not tell the difference between a Christian and someone who is not ! In traffic jams on the highway, in hospitals, in epidemics or in countries at war, are there also Christians who suffer with others ? in a sense like the others...
Pastor Jean Cadier (1898-1981), one of the main actors of the Réveil de la Drôme, says that in March 1928, returning from a mission in Ardèche, the steering bar of his car broke and that he violently hit a plane tree between Crest and Saillans : “I was taken to the hospital in Crest. I had kept all my knowledge and I prayed, thinking of my imminent appearance before the divine tribunal, of the prayer of the tax collector : O God, be appeased towards me who am a sinner. (Luke 18.13)
I learned through this that the will of God is sovereign and that my ministry as a pastor in no way protected me from suffering and death. It does not say that God always protects his children from suffering and death, but it does say that neither suffering nor death can separate us from his love. And my confidence in Him came out strengthened from that hour."
