"The LORD is good for those who hope in him, for him that seeketh him." Lamentations 3.25
Sometimes, when you have experienced a succession of negative events, you may fall into the very bad habit of thinking that the series will continue. You had problem after problem and you just expect that there will be others. That was my case, but I found out that it was not like that God wanted us to live.
Fear is the opposite of faith and it takes faith to accept good things in our lives.
During my childhood, I was the victim of abuse by my father. As a teenager, I married the first comer. But this man seemed even more disturbed than I was. He brutalized me and ended up abandoning me, and that was the end of our marriage. When I met Dave, I was a negative and disillusioned being, just trying to survive one day after another.
Because of all the injuries I had sustained, I had come to expect the worst in every situation. Even once I had discovered a close relationship with God, this mentality was a problem for me for a while. Then one fine morning, while I was in my bathroom, I remember being aware of a pressure, a bad presence around me. It was not new; I realized that this impression had never left me. I thought immediately : "What misfortune will it still happen to me ?"
I asked God what was going on and he showed me that I was disturbed by "bad feelings". Later I read Proverbs 15:15, where it says : "The unfortunate man lives in pain, and the happy man lives in a continual festival."
I understood that this verse referred to the fear of a misfortune when everything was fine. Looking back on my life, I noticed how disturbed I was at different times in the past. For example, the night Dave asked me to marry, he told me he wanted to talk to me. With my habit of imagining the worst, I thought as soon as he was about to break with me. This is exactly what Satan seeks: He wants you to live in fear of what might happen.
Fear is the opposite of faith and it takes faith to accept good things in our lives. My expectation of the worst came from the devil. If we do not take care, such a mentality can open the door to the evil plans of Satan. But if we expect good things, we are ready to accept the plans of God.
God is good. All he does is good and wonderful. All he gives us is better than what the devil gives us. So, should not our expectation be in him ? God wants to do something wonderful in your life every moment of every day. But you must be ready to welcome him.
An Encouragement for Today
God wants you to believe that something good will happen to you. He works in your life right now and when the happy event happens, it will be the result of what he has prepared for a long time. Whether you feel it or not, continue to pray and hope, because God longs to be kind and generous to you.
