Explosive force

It is from within, it is from the hearts of men that evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual immorality, murders, thefts, the thirst for possession, wickedness, fraud, debauchery, envious gaze, calumny, pride, madness. Mark 7. 21, 22

Explosive force

Albert Einstein wrote in 1948 : "The only real problem of all time is in the hearts and minds of men. It is not a physical problem, but a moral problem. It is easier. to change the nature of plutonium that evil spirit in men. It is not the exploding power of an atomic bomb that frightens us, but the wicked power of the human heart, its exploding force to the evil."

He was not the first to make this lucid observation. But we must go further, and grasp the intervention of God in the world.

Just before the flood, "the Lord saw that men were doing much evil on the earth and that all the thoughts of their hearts were constantly and only directed towards evil" (Genesis 6.5). Around the year 70 BC, the prophet Isaiah had the same pessimistic diagnosis as the scientist : "The whole head is sick and the whole heart is suffering. From the soles of the feet to the head, nothing is in good condition" (Isaiah 1.5, 6). The head is the seat of thoughts and will. The heart is our feelings, our affections. The foot evaluates walking, in other words driving.

Should we despair ? No, because the gospel brings an extraordinary response to this frightening observation, by revealing what fills the heart of God, and which we would gladly call "the explosive force" of his eternal love.
