Here are some of the themes from Patrick Hamilton's book, burned alive for his faithfulness to the Bible :

The Law shows us our faults.

- The Gospel gives us the remedy.

The Law announces the judgment to us.

- The Gospel, salvation.

The Law is the word of the wrath of God.

- The Gospel, the word of God's grace.

The Fa brings us to despair.

- The Gospel gives us freedom.

Dialogue between the Law and the Gospel :

The Law says : Pay what you owe.

- The Gospel announces : Christ paid for you.

The Law calls out to us : You are a miserable sinner, and you will die.

- The Gospel declares : Your sins are forgiven; you will be saved.

The Law teaches : You must divide your sins.

- The Gospel declares : Christ took upon himself the punishment you deserved.

The Law says : The wrath of God is upon you.

- The Gospel teaches : Christ has reconciled you to God by his blood.

The Law asks : Where is your righteousness, where is your good works, where is the payment that you can give to God ?

- The Gospel answers : Christ paid for you, he is your righteousness, your salvation, he gives you eternal life.
