Footsteps, big and small... (2)

"Truly, truly, I say to you, Jesus replied to them, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. But the slave does not stay forever in the family ; it is the Son who remains there forever. If therefore the Son liberates you, you will be truly free." John 8. 34-36

We recalled it yesterday: during his short visit to the moon on July 21, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong uttered this famous sentence : "A small step for a man... A giant step for humanity".

Twenty centuries earlier, the coming to earth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, was thus announced : "Thanks to her, the rising sun has visited us from above to enlighten those who are seated in the darkness and in the darkness. the shadow of death, to direct our steps on the path of peace" (Luke 1. 78, 79).

The Son of God, one with God in His glory, has wiped himself out, has been found as a man on the earth. Is the phrase "giant step" enough to describe that he has left the glory of heaven to visit us, as a man, and to live in our midst ?

Who will then describe "little steps" of Jesus on the earth ? How, in his life as a man, he walked tirelessly "today, tomorrow, and the next day," as he put it (Luke 13:33), "who went about doing good and healing. all who were under the dominion of the devil, because God was with him "(Acts 10:38, 39) ? God himself testifies : "This is my beloved Son, who has my whole approval : listen to him !" (Matt 17: 5).

But what about the last steps of the end of the visit ? "Jesus, carrying his cross, came out of the city to go to the place called "the Skull", which is said in Hebrew Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on each side and Jesus in the middle" (John 19:17, 18). "He humbled himself, showing obedience unto death, even death on the cross" (Phil 2: 8). And there, on the cross, "He gave himself for us" (Eph.5: 2), "For by one offering he has perfected for ever those whom he makes holy." (Hebrews 10:14).

What an extraordinary act ! "Indeed, just as by the disobedience of a single man many have been made sinners, many will be made righteous by the obedience of one" (Rom 5. 19).

What a giant step to save humanity ! Now "everyone who will appeal in the name of the Lord will be saved" (Rom 10: 13). "He who believes in the Son has eternal life" (John 3: 36), "For freedom Christ has set us free" (Gal 5: 1).
