"And you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the thousands of Judah, out of you will come out for me the one who is to rule in Israel, and whose origins have been of oldness from the days of eternity." Micah 5 2

It is in the darkest moment of Judah's history that Micah gives this prophecy, one of the most remarkable of the A.T. It has at least two aims : to announce to the people the place of the birth of the Messiah precisely and to relate it to other promises of God.

Thus, the mention of Judah, in the verse of the day, recalls that of Jacob, given ten centuries earlier : "The scepter shall not depart from Judah" (Genesis 49:10). The phrase "he shall go out" refers to Isaiah, a prophet who began his career a few years before Micah : "There shall come out a scion of the trunk of Jesse" (Isa 11. 1), "Isaiah the Bethlehemite" the father of King David (1 Sam. 16. 1). The analogy between the Messiah and King David is emphasized by the fact that "the one who must dominate in Israel", the Messiah, "will come out for me", that is to say for God. The same indication is given about David when God reveals to Samuel : "I saw among his sons (those of Jesse) a king for me" (1 Sam. 16: 1), then orders him : "You will anoint for me he whom I will speak to you" (v. 3).

Indeed, despite his falls and his mistakes, David was a king according to the heart of God (Acts 13:22), a hero of the faith (Heb.11: 32), who served God's plan (Act 13. 36). But what a difference between him and Jesus, the Messiah ! In each of Jesus words, in each of his acts, God saw only grace and truth, light and holiness. Men have witnessed the full satisfaction of the Father at the baptism and transfiguration of his "beloved Son".

Jesus alone came to the earth to do the will of God (Heb. He only did what pleased his Father (John 8:29). He was in perfection a man for God. He glorified God and God glorified him.

"Wherefore God also lifted him up high, and gave him the name that is above every name, that in the name of Jesus every knee may be bowed ... and every tongue shall know that Jesus Christ is Lord. to the glory of God the Father" (Phil 2: 9-11).
