Freed ! Delivered !

Who will free me from this body that leads me to death ? Romans 7.24

He's in jail, so what ? He is 71 years, so what ? He has almost finished "paying" and the "skittle" is coming soon. The prison chaplain has promised him that when he gets out, they will both take a trip to the seaside. The sea he has never seen before.

A few months ago that same chaplain came in singing a little hymn with the old words : "My beloved Savior my sin has atoned..." And that brought back a distant memory to that man. As a child, he heard these words. Yes, he even sang them !

His heart is touched. From that day and little by little, he walks in his thoughts, in his heart, slowly approaches God, and finally entrusts his life to him.

Yes. The "skittle" is coming soon, but it comes too late to celebrate the release from prison. The man is sick. Very sick but peaceful. It is he who announces to the chaplain that he is going to go directly to heaven, without going to see the sea, but in the presence of God. The chaplain will accompany his last hours by whispering in his ear, in a loop, the words of the little song that marked his childhood : "My beloved Savior..."

Proposed reading : 2nd Letter to the Corinthians, chapter 1, verses 8 to 10.

1.8 Yes, Christian brothers and sisters, we want to let you know this : in the province of Asia, we have endured great suffering. Their weight was very heavy, it exceeded our strength, we even thought we were dying.

1.9 We were sure to be condemned to death. So we could no longer put our trust in ourselves, we had to put our trust in God, who raises the dead.

1.10 It is God who delivered us from this danger of death and he will deliver us again. Yes, we trust in him, he will deliver us again.
