From polished stones

The blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, continually cleanses me from all sin.

The fact that a person has repented of his sins and claimed his salvation in Christ does not mean that his whole personality has been transformed instantly. It is clear that a vital process of transformation has begun, but it may take years before all areas of the personality have undergone this change.

When David needed smooth pebbles to insert them into his sling and kill Goliath, he descended into the valley, the modest place of humility. There, in the stream, he found the pebbles he needed. By what had they polished ? By two kinds of action, first of all, the water that passed over them, then the constant clashes against each other.

This is an image of the formation of the character of a Christian. First, there is a continual bath in the water of the Word (see Ephesians 5:26). Then, when we "bump into" each other during personal relationships, our sharp angles gradually erode until they smooth out. We are "living stones" that require continual polishing. (See 1 Peter 2: 5)

Let me tell you aside that when Jesus needs 'living stones' for his sling, he too goes down into the valley, the place of humility. There, he chooses stones that have been polished by the action of the word of God and by the pressure of a regular fraternal communion. It is a sign of spiritual maturity that we sincerely love our brothers and sisters in Christ, not only because of their personality, but for what they represent for Jesus, who gave his life and blood for everyone. between them.
