"The wrath of Jacob was kindled against Rachel, and he said, Am I in the place of God that hinders thee from being fertile" (Genesis 30 : 6).

 

While Leah and Rachel are in conflict due to their jealousy, we can observe that Jacob stays out of this conflict until Rachel says, "Give me children, or I die." One can understand her despair, but there she asks Jacob to take the place of God. So Jacob gets angry. Is he angry because she seems to make him responsible for her sterility, or because she is blackmailing him to suicide ? Perhaps it is for these two reasons at once !

Do you ever get angry ? Notice that Jacob is not a "milk soup", getting annoyed for a yes or no. When his father-in-law Laban deceived him on his wedding day, we are not told that he was angry, but simply said, "What have you done to me ? (Genesis 29:25). Yet there was enough to get angry ! So do not justify your tantrums by taking the special case of Jacob, or even that of Jesus when he chases the vendors of the temple !

Jacob is indignant, for Rachel seems to make him bear the responsibility for this painful situation ; Now, that is not fair, Jacob has nothing to do with it. Injustice can provoke this feeling of anger, and that is understandable ; God himself can understand it. However, it is important to manage this feeling so as not to be drawn into sin : "If you get angry, do not sin. May the sun not lie down on your anger. And leave no room for the devil "(Ephesians 4:26).
Did Jacob manage his anger ? I do not know ! What we know is that right after this tension between him and Rachel, he will accept Rachel's proposal, to conceive children through his servant Bilha. Certainly, this will help to give Jacob two extra sons, but was it this way that God would have wanted to give twelve sons to Jacob ? Jacob, could have offered Rachel to trust God, instead of getting angry with her. Could God not make her fruitful sooner, and give her four sons, instead of the two she had ?
But anger prevents Jacob from thinking healthy, anger disposes him to choose a carnal way rather than a spiritual path. Anger can lead you to make bad choices.

Advice for this day :

As the psalmist says : "Leave anger, let go of wrath ; Do not be angry, it would be wrong "(Psalm 37: 8), listen to this wise counsel.
