God does not fear dysfunctional families !

“Return to the land of your fathers and to your birthplace, and I will be with you.” Genesis 31. 3

The phrase “a dysfunctional family” dates back to the 1970s and 1980s to describe a family that did not know how to deal with their children whose problems stuck to their skin even as adults. If the one you grew up in strikes you as a typical dysfunctional family, then you are not unique ! Irish writer George Bernard Shaw once said : “I don't know if men inhabit the moon, but if they do, they must use the earth as a gigantic asylum for their mentally ill !” Every family is affected by sin and as such can be described as dysfunctional. God knows we are all like this, and He is not afraid to take on the challenge of getting us back to functioning as He intended. Consider the life of Jacob. Born into a torn family, Isaac loving his eldest son Esau and neglecting his younger son and Rebecca preferring Jacob to the detriment of his eldest, Jacob is forced into exile to escape the tragedy that is brewing. Arrived at his uncle Laban's, he gets rid of him, sneaky like him and the best crook, if that is still possible ! If we read the story of Jacob, Laban, and Esau today, it is to understand how God works in the hearts of each of us. We are all broken, corrupt and defective individuals, individuals whose conduct leaves much to be desired, but whom God wants to transform. Throughout Jacob's years away from home and the land of promise, God was with him. He did not forsake him, and, as He had promised him, He brought him back safe and sound to his starting point. You too can benefit from the same promise. No matter how you start in life, nothing can scare or shock God. The secret is in the words : “I will be with you”
