God is a great teacher ! (2)
“A servant of the Lord... must be kind to all, able to teach and endure opposition. 2 Timothy 2.24
Paul's instruction to Timothy in his last letter has two aspects :
1- gentleness and love must transpire through his teaching. Pure knowledge, the best theology, the most advanced teaching techniques are not enough, it is also necessary for the teacher to show kindness, love, patience and never cease to encourage his students.
2- the ability to effectively teach not only biblical truths but above all a way of life, a behavior that honors God. In another letter Paul instructs Titus : "You... say that which corresponds to sound doctrine..." before explaining in the following verses more precisely what he means. “That old men should be sober, respectable... Old women should... teach young women to love their husbands and children... Encourage young people to be thoughtful... Indeed, the grace of God... teaches us to renounce an ungodly way of life and the lusts of this world and to live in the present time in accordance with wisdom, righteousness and godliness” (Titus 2.1-6 ; 11-12). Christianity is clearly a teaching movement rooted in a book, the Bible. Each of us is thus called to bear witness, to teach, to encourage, sometimes to correct, but always with patience. In God we have the example of the perfect teacher. He started in Eden with Adam and Eve. He continued with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, then later with Moses and the Hebrew people. Torah, the name of the first 5 books of the Bible means instruction, or teaching. He has never ceased throughout history to teach His children. It is up to us to follow in His footsteps. For, know it, the day of the final examination will come, when all teaching work will cease (John 9.4).
