God is with you in your fight

"Then their eyes opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from before them." Luke 24.31

Have you ever had the impression that God was thousands of miles away ? In fact, it is not. Whatever combat you are engaged in, you can be sure that you are not alone. God is with you.

Sorrow prevented the disciples from seeing Jesus. They needed God to show themselves to them.

Others before you wondered where God was in difficult times. This was particularly the case of the disciples, on the first Easter morning, three days after the crucifixion of Jesus. Luke 24 shows us two of them on the road to Emmaus. While walking, they talked about recent events - the arrest of Jesus, his flogging, his crucifixion - and were trying to understand. They had believed that Jesus was the Messiah, and their dream was broken. Some had asserted that his tomb was empty. They did not know what to think.

Suddenly, Jesus in person approached the two disciples and made their way with them. But the latter, in their grief, did not recognize him. When Jesus asked them what they were talking about, they explained how confused they were. Jesus then quoted texts from the Old Testament that gave meaning to what had just happened.

That same evening, while Jesus was supping with them, "their eyes opened and they recognized him ; but he vanished from before them" (Luke 24:31).

Put yourself in the place of the disciples. The man they had taken for God was dead, crucified. Three days later, they were told that he was resurrected, but they refused to believe him. And now a stranger walked with them, ate with them, and suddenly they realized that it was God himself! Then he disappeared.

Sorrow prevented the disciples from seeing Jesus. They needed God to show themselves to them.

It is the same for you. I do not know what misfortune this year has hit you - the loss of a loved one, your health, your work, a relationship or a large market. And your grief was such that you may not have seen that God was at your side. You were never, never alone in this situation. You did not see him, but he was there.

A question for you today

Ask God to reveal Himself to you. He wants you to see him. He wants you to know that you were never alone.

Rick Warren
